When I think of New York City, I think pigeons. They were all over the place, usually in large groups looking for people to feed them bread crumbs. And on this last trip, I realized there was something missing.
Where are these birds? Do they fly to Florida for the winter like many people who live in New York?
And today, as I was on my way to catch the TripperBus home, I finally saw one of the little guys. Just one. No playmates. Nobody throwing him bread crumbs.
And I started to worry about them. Hope they're alright!

Holy smoke, Pat ~ are you serious? Having never been to NY, I can't talk from first hand experience. But if NY pigeons are as filthy as Arizona pigeons, I'd be delighted as I could be that they're gone. I don't think they're migrating birds, but they are the nastiest birds I've ever been around. They make their nests out of their own poop! :-/
Randy, ok, poop nests are totally gross!
Patricia: First you tell me you thought the Raven in my post might be a pidgeon, and now I find you writing a post about pidgeons. You got a thing about pidgeons tonight... ? LOL.
Sorry, Pat... but I do like the cooing sound they make, like doves. :)
That does sound amazing, I have never been to New York, but every other city that I have been to has millions (seemingly) of pidgeons. It would be hard to say what may have happened to them.
Hi Pat!
This one is just the scout...the rest are waiting for the all clear signal!
Pat,
Mayor Bloomberg has taxed them out of the city. Washington is only a couple of hours flight south.
Rich
Pat - I can tell you that they do NOT come down here......perhaps soup pots???? kidding!
My family moved to NYC when I was 18 months old. NYC pigeons were every where as were the people feeding them. I can't believe they're gone. Maybe they just couldn't deal with the high cost of living any more
They moved down to Battery Park City! I don't really think about the pigeons too much, I still see large groups of them, now that you mention it I will probably see them everywhere.
Pat, I am sure you will see them on your next trip to NY. Maybe they had gone to DC for the inauguration and decided to stay longer.
Pat I think they went on Holiday. You know the Euro is worth more against the Dollar these days- maybe they flew over to the south of France to dive bomb the sunbathers? LOL
It's the budget cuts, Pat. Haven't you heard? There is a big economic crisis going on. Or maybe they're all down in DC at the Mayflower waiting for their, er, escort like Client # 9 aka New York's former Governor.
Boy,
Maybe they all went to Mexico or Italy. No shortage of them there. If I were a pigeon I would go warm too.
I think they're in the engines of flight #1549.
Pat, They can't afford the NYC lifestyle anymore. Are you sure you were looking for Pigeons this weekend?
Pat, The food chain has dried up for them because of the recession. They flew off to Saudi Arabia where the fat cats can afford bird food!
Patricia, are you sure they are all Pigeons? I thought most of them are actually seagulls.
Pat - Come to think of it, I have not noticed these annoying creatures in multiples lately on all of my recent trips to NY City. So, I probably won't be eating any chicken entrees there in the future!
