Like many old railroad stations around the country, Grand Central has recreated itself as a destination in its own right. It’s filled not only with people getting on and off trains, but also with people who are coming to the station for the restaurants and the shopping.
This trip, I discovered the Grand Central Market, with beautiful produce, fish, meat and cheese. Oh! And I don’t want to leave out the spices, flowers and the wine shop!
If you forgot someone on Valentine’s Day, you can make it up! And everything with red hearts is for sale!
If your favorite child of any age is having a birthday, this M&M’s cake is certain to be a huge hit.
Then I found these sardines – silly me! I thought they came in cans!
If you are a native New Yorker and a serious cook looking for fine ingredients, you’ll fine them here! Or if, like me, you are a tourist looking for prepared foods that might make a wonderful picnic, you won’t be disappointed.
The market is in Grand Central Station near the exits to Lexington Avenue.

Pat,
It is nice to see that they have a new vision for the Station and not willing to let it die a slow death.
What? No pickled herring?
Pat: Looks like a lot of fun. Having never been to Grand Central Station, I only ever conjure up the images of people coming and going on trains. Only stands to reason that where there is a mass of people, there will be retail.
Don, it did get pretty funky for a while there!
And Ed, I'm sure they have pickled herring there! It's a foodie's paradise!
The Sardines are 9.99? I never bought fresh Sardines. I thought it is the same price as sea bass.
Pat, I used to travel a whole bunch up and down the Northeast by train when I went to school in Philly. Philadelphia to NYC and Boston, and down to D.C. Train is quite a pleasant way to travel and there's always something interesting in the stations, whether it be Grand Central, 30th Street Station, Penn Station, or Union Station close to him here in D.C.
The M&M cake looks like lots of fun.
Wow - I have never been there. Perhaps I should visit next time I am in NYC. It reminds me of train stations in Europe
Hi Pat!
Having never been to Grand Central, you have just made it one of my destination stops. Thanks for the beautiful photos!
How fun! I've never been to GC and I didn't realize sardines were so BIG! :) I figured small can, small fish. Thanks for sharing these photos with us!
Pat,
Makes me want to go back and visit NYC again, not been there in 25 years.
MMMM Lobster. Send me a few of those puppies.
Pat,
The pictures look fantastic. We have Jackie Kennedy Onasis to thank. She was a preservationist and helped save Grand Central from the wrecking ball.
Wow, it sure has changed since I used to trudge through there daily in the 80's!
Pat- The last time I was in Grand Central Station was 1963 and we were transporting my bed-ridden grandfather by train from Connecticut to Florida. That first photo sure brought back memories!!!
Hi Pat... Grand Central Station is one of my favorite places. When I lived in NYC I used to enjoy going to the historic Oyster Bar on the lower level. If you've never been, pay it a visit next time you are there!
Pat, Grand Central was revived and restored to absolute magnificence. Kudos to NYC! (I remember the funky days!)
Pat - I love killing time in these shops while waiting for a train at Grand Central. You and I were there the same weekend again! We need to make a point of getting together for a drink the next time!
