Back in the 1970's, I dated a mild mannered guy who was an economist by weekday and a race car driver by weekend. And one of the highlights of this relationship was a weekend of at the track at Lime Rock, Connecticut, where Dick was racing his cute little Mazda in the showroom stock category, and I helped out in the pit crew. It was over that weekend that I bumped into two of my heros, who were up there with their race cars - Walter Cronkite and Paul Newman.
Paul Newman had an amazing life. He was not only a great actor and decent race car driver, but he was also a great humanitarian. His Newman's Own made yummy cookies, tasty salad dressing, and lately his own wine. And the profits went to good causes. One of these is Hole in the Wall, a summer camp for very sick children.
And his marriage to Joanne Woodward was a love story that defied the Hollywood stereotype.
I was saddened to hear of his death today. The Webster Street Cocktail Club will be planning a Paul Newman Film Festival over the next couple of months. He left some great stuff behind!

I've been watching the tributes on tv and I am saddened too....he's left a wonderful legacy behind him.....touched the lives of so many - and i'm probably in awe of the length of his marriage more then anything...its cool that you got to meet him!.
That's the best part...his marriage to Joanne...yup.....50 years of marriage in Hollywood..
Paul Newman was a CLASS ACT of the type that Hollywood does not provide us anymore. His substance, style, and the way he chose to live his life and manage his fame are examples that many of today's stars should take notice of and choose to emulate.
Their marriage was the best part of their lives, wow, to be married to the same spouse in Hollywood for 50 years deserves a huge Academy award! And 5 children! WOW, I love it!. I just read that he said, he wanted his marriage to last and that it did not matter if he was a sex symbol in Hollywood because he did not believe in Adultery. What a loyal husband! He said, " Why should I go out for Hamburger when I can have steak at home!"
His legacy is also the Hole in the Wall. The camp is free for all terminally ill children and it is over 200 M now. Way to go Newman! And I buy the cookies:)
Indeed. One of my all time favorites "Sting", was one of his best. He lived a good life.
Patricia....thanks for this....I had a moment of real loss yesterday....he will be missed...a fine person. He did lead a life that inspires us all.
We have experienced a real loss. He was a wonderful human being and one that will really be missed.
I'm glad you brought your old picture back. We had a hard time living without that red hair!
I am so sad that Paul Newman died. I always thought he was one classy man. He'll be missed.
Pat,
We're going to miss him. Paul Newman was one of the best.

My heart tugged when I heard of his passing. What a man. What an actor. What a human being.
Patricia - I, also, was saddened to hear of his death. I will miss him...
Hi Patricia. Paul Newman is one of my favorite actors. So much charisma. We watched Cool Hand Luke yesterday in remembrance. Great actor.
I always liked Paul Newman. Thought he was a great actor to watch.
I had no idea the extent of Paul Newman's humanitarian efforts until recently. I was also saddened to hear of his passing.
Pat - What wasn't there to love about this man? A true legacy indeed! BTW, I was loyal to his products. Mostly, because I admired that proceeds went to his charity and suppported that concept, but also these are very good products - and, the spaghetti sauce is the closest to authentic and the only sauce in a jar this 2nd generation Italian would ever consider buying!
