Cleveland Park's Wedding Cake House - You'll Want to Eat It Up!

In Washington,'s Cleveland Park, the home at 3225 Highland Place NW is fondly known as the "Wedding Cake House".  And when the listing agent, Terry Robinson of Long & Foster held it open today for her colleagues, it was on the top of my list of homes I had to visit.

And what a step back in time!

So, how did this charmer get it's name?  It's from the frieze above the front porch looks like icing on a cake that came from Martha Stewart's kitchen.

But this home is way more than just a delicious facade.

First, the home is situated on a lot of almost a third of an acre on Highland Place, one of Cleveland Park's most charming streets - more of a lane, really - with charming Victorian homes lining both sides of the street.  And it's only two blocks to Connecticut Avenue, with the Uptown Theater, shops, restaurants, and Metro.  On nice days, you can head a few blocks south and go for a walk or jog through the National Zoo.

This home's  interior has 6,200 square feet of space, with 7 bedrooms, 3 full and 2 half baths.  The ceilings soar to 11 feet on the first floor, and 10 feet on the two upper levels, and the floors look like they are beautifully restored heart pine originals.  There are three fireplaces with period mantles.

While the home retains many of it's original architectural details, the systems, kitchens and baths are thoroughly modern in their function.  The kitchen is very open and airy, with cherry cabinetry and slate counter tops, making for a renovation that was very true to the period.

This home is priced at $4,990,000.

Here is the full virtual tour for 225 Highland Place NW.

Hi Pat, the photo of that home is gorgeous. I can envision a great party and dancing on the porches in the early evenings at the home. Very appealing, thanks for sharing.

Hi Pat - That is a gorgeous house, and I would have definitely gotten off my butt to go look at it. They certainly don't make them like that anymore.

Thanks for your comments!

And yeah, that front porch is pretty amazing - makes me want a big old mint julip to sit and sip!

And the crafting that went into this home is indeed rare.  It was probably originally built as a summer home for a wealthy Washingtonian who wanted to escape the heat and misquitos one found close to the Capitol.

Hi Pat, What a wonderful home. Love the detail and the design. The upper deck area looks like you might have  some great views as well.

Aloha Patricia, It reminded me of the Wedding Cake house in Kennebunk Port, Maine. Mmm butter cream frosting...The lovely Cleveland Park Victorian is a grande dame of ages past. The owners did a wonderful job maintaining the home.

I guess my memory wasn't so accurate...

Pat, does not take much for one to imagine themselves on the front porch with a cup of coffee in hand! Enjoy your day!

Patricia, I love this house and it's rich history, but check out that porch, who wouldn't want to get married there. Absolutely beautiful.

Love the structures in those times Patricia. We don't have much details on architectures nowadays.

All the best!

Pat love this house and it is nice to see how the old and the new are integrated into this great home. The details on the inside as well as the outside speak loudly of the seller's pride in their home. Glad to see preservation is alive and well. Best wishes for a quality buyer who will appreciate this great home, Endre

I love the Wedding Cake House! The only one I ever saw before was the one in Kennebunk Port and I was in complete awe. I'm glad you posted this one and I'm glad Kimo Stowell mentioned the Maine Wedding Cake House to with picture. Wouldn't that be a romantic place to have a wedding???

I especially love the balconies and the large porch yours has to offer and all that attention to extraordinary cake details. It makes me hungry for wedding cake!

This is a huge piece of cake!  Eye candy on steroids. Even though it's not my style ( I'm into big old rustic lodge style homes), I can appreciate its beauty. The details are magnificent.  The home is aptly named, Patricia.

Pat- I can see why you went to see it!  When we were in Leesburg and visited DC on the weekends, we were so busy with the museums, we never saw much of the neighborhoods.  Wish we had!
