Has The TV Writers’ Strike Fed Our Blogging Addiction?

At this very moment, I would normally be watching Desperate Housewives, and then Brothers & Sisters.    But there is nothing on.

Well, there’s football or “The Sound of Music” (which I’ve seen a bunch of times).  But even Masterpiece Theater is a rerun.

So what to do?  Blog, of course!

But I can’t help but wonder what will happen when television comes back.  Right now, even HGTV is in reruns.

I’ve had time to read and blog.  To sell houses and blog.  To put together my goals and business plan and blog.  To carry out last year’s business plan and blog!

I may just owe all of this to the television writers union or guild or whatever it is.

So please stay out on strike!

Pat - You gotta read Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert or read E Myth Mastery by Michael Gerber.

Aziz,, that one is on my list.  I heard the author on one of the WAMU programs and knew it had to be a great book!

Pat, I hope the WGA strike gets settled amicably.  The strike is eight weeks old now and has cost the entertainment industry over 100 million dollars, largely thanks to the greed and stupidity of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.

Oh Patricia,  I want my Jon Stewart!!!!!  I want my Scrubs!!!  Maybe this will push Scrubs into another season.

Seriously, though, in my area, the writer's strike is really hurting people.  It is not just the writers.  Think about all the people involved in production.  The grips, hairdressers, catering crews, drivers, construction crews, and more are really strapped.  I know several real estate deals that are not happening until this is over.  Most writers really don't make that much.  I can say that I'm well versed on the strike reasons, but a lot of people are hurting.  Unless  you live around it, it's hard to realize.

Now, I know your post was humorous, so don't let me rain on it.  I love your attitude.  They are talking about putting more reality shows on and I HATE reality shows.   If that happens, I'll be here with you! ;)

Don't think it's made much difference for us. Out west Pat, the good stuff doesn't come on until at least 9, mostly 10, and by then we're normally done with our blogs for the day.

best new years wishes

Patricia, I can watch TV and blog. I am addicted to cable news. So I can have it on in the background in the other room, and take it in. I get up if there is some story that I want to hang on every word. We don't any Serial TV that we watch any more so not missing anything! I feel for you though!

Happy New Year,

Ginger

I agree with Elaine.  The producers want a free ride when it comes to DVD residuals and to new media uses.  The whole thing is an attack on the intellectual property rights of the folks who create this material.  It's not unlike the theft of people's blogs here on AR and it needs to be stopped.

Eric, I feel like my post was sort of flip after reading your comments!  You are right.  It should get settled quickly and amicably.

Elaine, reading your post made me feel like this post was really flip!  The hair dressers and caterers need to get back to work, along with everyone else.  And I'm hoping that Jon Steward follows Letterman's lead!  I love his show!  I miss his show!

Gary & Richard, I stay up late anyway, so it doesn't matter when it comes on.

Ginger, I'm actually watching a bit of cable news these days!

Pat -- Naw, there was nothing wrong with your post.  I just got on my soapbox, as usual, and started ranting about greedy producers.  You know me LOL!

Happy New Year!

The runaway success of "reality" television is an indictment of the television writers.  Publicity seekers being humiliated is more popular than the storylines from most writers.  I see NBC is bringing back "Knight Rider."  Will they hire writers or will they just recycle the bad scripts from the original?  Would anyone know the difference?

Patricia - Thats funny, I am watching/listening to Sound of Music right now LOL! At least there isnt a blogger strike!

I miss my Sunday nights as well, Pat.  My poor husband doesn't know what to do--he was flipping channels between XMEN and The Sound of Music tonight.  I'm running over the remote tomorrow and sticking to blogging with cable news in the background.

Pat - I have also watched less TV during the writers' strike, but I do miss a couple of shows, like "The Office" and "Scrubs".  I also heard that "24" will be delayed from its slated season premiere in January.  I do appreciate the extra time to blog, though.

Football 1 Thinks are so bad that yesterday (Saturday) I went to turn on the evening news and 2 out of 3 of our major networks will telecasting the SAME football game!  New England Patriots and the Redskins(?)....now I know that was an impotant came but so important that if a MAN were channel surfing he'd find it on 2 stations side-by-side??????????

I've been watching more satelite while I blog because I can't stand to watch Leno/Letterman reruns.  But even with all those channels, there still isn't anything on TV:)

Hi Patricia:  I am sure it has.  I usually watch Letterman every night just before bedtime.  He has had some excellent reruns on since the start of the writer's strike, but that only keeps my attention for so long.  I am sure that has provided some empty time for some, and what a great place to fill it.  AR.

Patricia, I hardly noticed the writer's strike because I don't watch much t.v.  We mostly have the tube here to watch the videos we rent from Netflix, Dancing with the Stars, Desperate Housewives, and my wife enjoys Oprah and Dr. Phil.  Other than that, I'm just waiting for the return of LOST.

Eric, it's nice to see the adjective "greedy" in front of a profession other than our own!

Frank, I'm not sure that more "Big Brother" or "Beauty and the Geek" would break me of my blog habit.

Juliana, a bloggers' strike?  What a concept!

Amanda, I think that cable news is an excellent choice for blog background music!  And you never know when the news cycle will inspire a post!

Jason, last night I realized how much time I wasted in front of the set.

Mary, I don't even know who won that one - and I live in DC!

Jennifer, thank God for QVC!  At least they don't do reruns!

Karen Anne, I heard that Letterman cut a deal with his writers, and that they are going back.

And Brian, Dancing With The Stars?  That does not surprise me!  I actually loved the last bunch.

I'm into Discovery Channel, the NFL and ESPN. Animals, jocks and talking heads -- no writers needed fortunately.

Pat--I don't know if I blog more but I do not watch as much TV. I did watch the Amazing Race last night though. Which is a pretty good show for reality TV.

Even my Tivo is empty of shows to watch!  It is a sad day.  Of course I usually blog while watching TV anyway.

Patricia, maybe some of us should go write for our favorite shows. Maybe that would wake these people up.
Posted by Danny Thornton (R & D Management) about 1 year ago

Yep - there is nothing on. 250 Channels and I can't find anything to fall asleep to. Thank god for Law and Order reruns. Only problem is - I usually only see the Law part - then I fall asleep for the Order part - as far as I know the criminal always get away with it.

Happy New Year

A good friend of mine sent me this YouTube link about the strike.  It was put on by a couple of writers from The Daily Show -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PzRHlpEmr0w

It's a real hoot and only about 3-4 minutes long.

Patricia, sounds like you're honing your writing skills.  You could always go to Hollywood if you get tired of real estate (after the strike, of course).

Patricia - I love your sense of humor.  I did not think  you were being flip at all and I hope you did not think I was being snarky.  You gave me a chance to give a news story a little different perspective because I live in an entertainment area.  Writers are everywhere, on every show -- news, history, soap operas, game shows, cooking shows, MTV, Bravo, talk shows, ESPN, and yes, "reality" shows (unless it's COPS, yuck!).  It is all an intellectual property debate brought up because of our changing technology.  I hope more shows make deals with the guild to put people back to work soon.  Thanks for providing this post and if the lack of TV makes you blog more, YAY for us!

Patricia, I love how one situation as you described, can turn into a blessing in another way. It was the same way years ago during the baseball and football seasons that had strikes. People got to re-connect with their families. Happy New Year. (And keep writing your wonderful blogs to feed our AR addiction)

Patricia - This really points out the ripple effect and how everything is interconnected.  LA is an entertainment hub and we all know someone impacted by the writer's strike either directly or indirectly. They would love to go back to work just as much as real estate agents would like to see business pick up!

Fortunately for me, I had never gotten into Law & Order. Well, it's sort of fortunate, because now that I've decided to catch up, there's something like 17 years of re-runs that my TIVO records.

Pat, I'm a huge DH fan and had just gotten into Brothers & Sisters.  Actually, I don't NEED to be up that late on  a Sunday.  I can coast on reruns; I can live off Gabrielle's wardrobe changes forever.  I agree with Elaine's observations that this is hurting a lot of that area's commerce.  You don't know that unless your local (or have an expansive viewpoint).

How will Wisteria Lane and it's inhabitants come back from the tornado?  Only time (and successful negotiation) will tell!

Pat - Writer's strike or not - it's Seinfeld reruns or Seinfeld DVD's all the way for me!  I laugh each time like the first time I saw each episode!!

I wish I could say it only helped fuel the fire of my blogging, but I never really let the TV get in my way of blogging and making new friends. Plus I learned a lot of things, like there really are nice people in Washington DC - lol

Have a happy and successful 2008,
