The Cosmos Club: The Ultimate "Gentleman's Club"

The Cosmos Club is located at 1515 Massachusetts Avenue NW, near Dupont Circle.  To be eligible for membership, one must have "done meritorious original work in science, literature, or the arts, or... recognized as distinguished in a learned profession or in public service".  Until 1988, they didn't let women in.  And when a gentleman friend (he distinguished himself in public service)  invited me there for dinner back in the 1970's, I (well, all women) had to enter through the side door.  Now they let us in as members, and if we are invited by a guest, we get to come in through the beautiful front door.

So it's not really a gentleman's club any more.  And it is a beautiful place.  It used to be someone's home -  it was known as the Mary Scott Townsend house.  Her daughter lived there until World War II, and after she died, the Cosmos Club bought it from her estate.

This is another one of those places I'd recommend seeing, whether you are visiting or live here in DC.

It would be interesting to see the membership list. I wonder who the first woman member was?

That is stunning architecture. Thankfully times have changed, but what took so long?! I, too, would be curious about membership, and dues. LOL

Been by it many times!  Never been in it!  Well, after all, it is a Gentlemen's Club, and well, they might not let me in...

Pat, there is the University Club in Providence which was similar to this one and my CEO of my corporation I worked for had me entertaining out of state consultants here on proposals and it was the male domain...I would be the only female in the 80's to be in it and only allowed in one of the dining rooms..lol..have times changed...yes.

We are lucky living around Washington DC . . that house reminds me of houses I saw in France. . they were the elite society then. .

I remember the Cosmos Club!  And I remember having to enter through the side door the only time I ever got to go in it.  I remember being "peeved!"  Thanks for the walk down memory lane!
