Pat Kennedy - Your Washington, DC Real Estate Connection

Rolling Down The River - Great Washington, DC Getaway!

One way to beat the Washington, DC heat is to take a trip to Harpers Ferry West Virginia to go tubing.

At Harpers Ferry, where the  Shenandoah flows into the Potomac, I found these tubers floating down the lazy rivers on a steamy August Saturday, and they all looked more relaxed than a cat.  Forget white water rafting!  This water sport is the one for me!

Harpers Ferry is only about an hour north of Washington.  Wel, it's a little longer on weekends because of the tubers traffic just before you get there, along Route 340.  And if you bring a cooler with a picnic lunch, the cooler can have it's own tube.

You can go to an auto supply store and buy your own, or you can rent tubes and flotation vests from many of the area suppliers.

And don't forget the sun screen!

Patricia- I can't tell how many times we went to Harper's Ferry when we lived in Leesburg.  But, we missed this sight!  Wow, will definitely have to go back.

Pat, We saw the same thing the end of July when we were in the area for a wedding.  Very pretty area.

They are indeed spectacular to see.  Parked up and down Route 340, walking to the water with their "tubes", they are a fun group.  The overlook on the Virginia side "Loudoun Heights Trail" is a nice climb too with fabulous views of Harpers Ferry and the river.

Great photos.

Great photos!  We used to do that on the Deleware River, except we always had one tube for the cooler!

Hey Pat, I love tubing, they have that in New Paltz NY. Do they have wood boards on the bottom to protect your bum from getting hurt :) Looks like a blast and the pictures are great too!

One of my favorite summer days out was a trip down the Farmington River in CT, on tubes !!!

A relaxing, lazy float for hours, was just the type of retreat I needed .. and probably need on a regular basis !!!

That looks sooo relaxing! The only time I been on a ride like that was in a fabricated water park and the line took sooo long to get on it, it lost it's purpose.

Patricia, I have not been tubing in a long time. Looks very relaxing.

Patricia - Rafting is a big part of Sacramento life.  In fact a daughter and two granddaughters rafted on the American River yesterday.  My 10 year old granddaughter actually napped along the way - in her Snuggie!  Great pictures!

Been there, done that with the white water rafting.  I think I'm ready for an afternoon of tubing...

That looks like a lot of fun, but the color of the tubes seems somewhat out of place. I guess it makes them easier to see.

Hi Pat!
This reminds me of an event we use to have in high school (before lawsuits and insurance was an issue).  It was called the Black Bart Races.  We would make our rafts and then float them down the Sacramento River.  We would have teams on the levees that would shoot water balloons at them in hopes of sinking them.  Can you imagine letting anyone do this now? It sure was fun!

The last time I went white water rafting I was flipped out of the boat twice - this looks much more my speed.

Ok Pat, you twisted my arm.  I'm visiting DC to see an old friend in this fall - maybe they have a good fly fishing spot we can ride the tube to.

Seems like a "mo better" kind of tube than the other kind of tube, the boob tube.

Posted by Keith Sellers, Greater Kalamazoo and Lakeshore (Sellers Real Estate) over 10 years ago

Patricia, I haven't ever seen so many tubers!  What fun!  I'd would have done this in my early days.

Tubing is our favorite! We've done the white water rafting, but tubing is fun, relaxing and the whole family can enjoy it. Luckily it's not that crowded on the rivers we tube!

Innertubing at Harpers Ferry is the day trip so many in our area need.  So close for those that can't take the whole week, or weekend off.

Posted by Anne Clark (Metro Referrals) over 10 years ago

wow, that's one crowded river. We're having our first heat wave of the summer today in San Mateo County and San Francisco -- but tomorrow will be cooler, and by the weekend we'll be enjoying 78-80 degree temps once again. But today?? Your photo is awfully appealing.
