If you think that the Federal Government has run amok regulating our lives, there was a really good one on the news tonight. But it isn't the Feds this time.
The city council in Alexandria, Virginia is considering a regulation that would, if adopted, require cab drivers to be "polite" to passengers and other drivers. If they get enough complaints that they are "rude", they could lose their hack license!
Whoa! What's "polite"? What's "rude"? When you write a regulation, you need clear definitions. That could be a challenge for these wanna be regulators!
One of the drivers interviewed on the news pointed out that many of the passengers take cabs because they are too drunk to drive themselves. So can they charge more if the passenger behaves badly?
I think this is one of those things that is better regulated by the market place. If a cabbie is mean to Mr. Market, it will likely reduce the tip he receives.
I'm an old New Yorker. Cabbies there are all nuts. And it doesn't seem to matter. I just want to be able to get one when I need one.
